Vet school experience! help plz?

Okay! So I am currently enrolled in school and my major is Animal Science (Pre-Vet field). I was thinking of going to the vet the vet tech institute to become a vet tech and earn experience relevant to vet school. I now have decided that its a waste of time to do, but i still need to earn experience as a vet assistant or technician ( if i go to school). Does anyone know how to become a vet assistant?
